I think this is a great deal. My question is: Will users of the Comcast version be able to upgrade for free to Norton Version 4 when it is available? Please check with Comcast just what is in their version of the Norton product. You won't have the same registration type of key for this program. I'm not sure if support for the product will work the same way as your support works now.

If you have a Norton product installed now, you will probably have to uninstall the version you have now and lose your subscription also from Symantec and get the download and install from Comcast and that will probably be different than the version from Symantec even without the backup part. I had purchased a new boxed copy of NIS from Costco to use to renew my subscription but I am considering returning it and using the free Norton from Comcast. Was just hoping that I would be able to update it to Norton Version 4 when it comes out.

I believe that is a question you should ask Comcast. I believe your subscription would not be a Symantec subscription any more, so I don't know how the new versions would be handled. You should get an actual description of the program features you will be getting from Comcast before you make the actual decision to go with them.

If you want to hang in there a bit, I'll load the Comcast version on a test computer and take a look at it. The installation followed and took just over one minute. It appears to be a customized version of Norton v3 with a version number of 3.

There is no option for online backup, but of course there is the option for local backup. I will leave it installed for a day in case you have any questions. I think it would be important to find out if this version can be updated to v4 when it becomes available. Since I am a comcast high speed internet customer I decided to find out more about this offer.

I contacted customer support for the Norton Security Suite again today and this time was told that version 4 is not available for Comcast customers and there is no release date, she said that Comcast customers will be notified when version 4 is available, no telling when that will be though.

Considering the huge number of Comcast customers that are looking to upgrade to version 4, the lack of reliable information on this subject is somewhat frustrating.

I wonder if you install the version from Comcast, could you then perform an upgrade using the Version 4 file downloaded from Symantec? A problem has occurred that needs your attention: The upgrade you are attempting to install is not.

Please contact your internet service provider for the correct upgrade or uninstall the version of the product already on your computer and try again. After that you should be at the Comcast Support Forums, click on security and antivirus at the top, then scroll down to this thread: Norton V 4 now available for upgrade for current users.

The product available through Comcast--Norton Security Suite--is unique to Comcast and therefore not on the same release schedule as Norton But rest assured, Comcast customers who are eligible for the Norton product as a part of their high speed Internet access package are eligible to receive any upgrade to the product when it is available. There are physical differences in the programs. If you are addressing me the point was perhaps obscured by the distortion the system caused to my posting where the essential part was:.

Which means there are differences in what modules are there or are active And their users will not get updates in the same way. As you may have seen someone has tried to update their Comcast V3 with the public V4 and it won't. This is quite normal. The important difference here between the Comcast version of N and the actual Norton version of N is that you can not receive the update to version 4 from the Symantec website or our links to the download which is given out in the Forum.

The important thing to note is that the update to version 4 will have to come from Comcast when they are ready to distribute it, when ever that may be. Comcast users of Norton Security Suite will have to keep after Comcast to update the program for them since it is a special version of the program.

But the program is made by Symantec. How is it up to Comcast? Did Symantec already "give" the update to Comcast to distribute? You make it sound as if this is a Comcast product and not Symantec. I interpret the press release to basically state that Comcast paid Symantec a dollar amount to make a Comcast branded version of N and allow Comcast to distribute to it's customers.

It is up to Comcast to provide version 4 when they have it ready. The same thing applies to version 4. This quote above was taken from the Comcast website. Usually when a product is powered by another company, that means that the technology from the other product was used. To me, that quote above makes it sound like Comcast made the security suite based on N technology. Even if Symantec made the product for Comcast, it will still be up to Comcast to distribute it. We are just users here, so I have no idea who made the Comcast Security Suite.

It is a Comcast product because it has it's own backup system which is different from Norton N If that reasoning applied, this forum would be at comcast.

Also, we really should be calling this Comcast Comcast Support. We are attempting to provide support for the Comcast users because we do have more product knowledge until there are a few more knowledgeable users on their forum. Several of our users have switched to the Comcast version and it is to be hoped that they will spend some support time on the Comcast forum.

We are not privy to any agreements regarding products or services between Comcast and Symantec. If the Comcast users want to be able to upgrade their versions they will need to make that clear to Comcast. I get a "Page Expired" message when I click on the link you provided. My question is why do some of the posters on her leave us COMCAST folks with the impression that what appears to be their personal opinions are in fact the "official word" from Norton?

In my experience, when an ISP offers a free version of a commercial product the complimentary version will seldom contain the most current technical or convenience features that would be found in the paid version.

I would not really expect Comcast to make the latest state-of-art program available free of charge, but given that many users of the paid product are considering moving to the ISP's offering, it would be nice if either Symantec or Comcast could clear the air so that users do not have to guess about when, or if, enhancements will be added to the free version.

Obviously I am not a Symantec employee, but as far as I am concerned, all are welcome to participate here.

I have no doubt that you will find the Norton Community members willing to help out in those areas that are common to both products. However, if a question arises about an issue or feature unique to the Comcast Security Suite, we may not know the answer.

In that case, a link back to the Comcast Forums may yield better information and hopefully will not be interpreted as an unwelcome gesture. I don't know why there is a page error. When I click on the link, it works.

It will all get sorted out eventually. Not sure I will switch to Norton anyway, as Win 7 has backup already and NIS seems to have more options I can change to suit my needs. Sorry, if I am preaching to the choir. The UAL is an excellent suggestion and I will try to get a copy of it from our forum admin over there and provide feedback - if I get a copy of it. If there are others that you are aaware of, please inform. Rome wasn't built in a day and neither was a conversion from McAfee to Norton completed in a day.

They respsonded with " version 3. I agree with you about last year's version. I have seen last year's version of a lot of programs dirt cheap on the net.
